Brazilian scientists identify Gamma Plus variant of coronavirus

A news article in the R7 portal explains the relevance of genomic surveillance and cites Genov as a reference in identifying new coronavirus variants in Brazil. "We call it Gamma Plus when a mutation it has acquired happens at some position in the virus genome that indicates something of risk. The Gamma Plus has a mutation in a furin cleavage site that is very important for viral infection in the cell and is a mutation that has been seen in both the Alpha variant of concern (UK) and the Indian variant (Delta)," explained José Eduardo Levi, Genov coordinator and virologist at Dasa.
